When the tradition of dining on sushi at home first came into the Western world, many cultures of Japan were looking for ways to bring their creative appetites to the forefront. Hence, they introduced the trend to the United States. In the years that followed, sushi had all kinds of new twists to offer Americans. Thus, Sushi was a staple in almost every restaurant across the country.

Historically, there are no records of this sushi being served in Nihon. A word that literally means Japanese and that word was coined by westerners to mean that the people who created it were native to the land of Japan. Over time, this phrase was adopted and referred to as sushi all across the world as a whole. Today, sushi is popular in almost every corner of the world and although the dishes vary slightly. They are nearly always comprised of fish and rice.

Characteristics Of Sushi At Home

Sushisaii or “Nihon sushi” was created after the Japanese brought the delicious flavor of a particular type of seafood with them. As it spread, it quickly became recognized and embraced by a new generation. When it reached the West, the dish quickly became known as “western sushi” but still retains the characteristics that made it so incredibly popular.

Kaiseki is Japanese for “order”consummation” and it refers to the conclusion of a meal that has been presented properly. In the East, the meal is often a spiritual experience and the rice and fish are given the proper respect that they deserve. For the Japanese, preparing and presenting the meal and serving it in a manner that goes along with it is extremely important. This is the reason that the dish called Sushi began and it’s the same reason that some cultures feel that they have the right to call it a Sushi.

The preparation and presentation of Kaiseki are an important part of the whole process. The fish is generally brought directly from the ocean where it was caught. After being cooked and preserved, it is ready to be presented to the family.

What Is Important In Making Sushi At Home

Preparation is of the utmost importance in the making of Sushi. The initial phase of preparation begins with the choice of rice. The Sushi rice is a type of rice that is prepared and tested before it’s offered to the diners.

It is the primary reason why a sushi restaurant is always ready for dinner. They use a combination of grains that are known to be most conducive to the creation of Sushi. Grains like ours and buckwheat are used to create a perfect mix of flavors and textures for the dish.

Once the grains are selected, they are mixed together with the other ingredients and soaked in lukewarm water. The rice is then strained and the mixture is rolled into rice balls that are coated with nori (seaweed). As the rice mixture sits and rests. A soy sauce-based marinade will be applied which is then wrapped in nori, allowed to sit and ripen.

What To Do When The Process Is Complete

When this process is complete, the rice balls are then rolled and dyed with a natural color and pressed into rolls that are ready to be served. Another important step in the process is that. The Sushi chef must be careful not to leave the nori under the heat source because it will burn. The temperature should be sufficient to completely dry out the nori but enough to allow it to adhere to the roll.

The final step is to fill the roll with slices of fresh fish and gently incorporate other ingredients into the mix for a distinct flavor. From there, the sushi is placed on the table and the cutters are taken to slice and decorate it. The process is then repeated until all ingredients are ready to serve.

Another version of Sushi is called nigiri sushi. Nigiri means “fine” and it refers to the smaller portion of Sushi that is served in a bowl with a dip. While the main preparation and presentation of Sushi differ. The chef can use the same tools and techniques to prepare this type of sushi.

Bottom Line

There are also two types of restaurants in the United States that serve this form of sushi. One that is a traditional style and the other is more contemporary. Japanese influenced, this makes for a great variety for guests that may not be familiar with the process or maybe already familiar with it.
