Mackerel Fish In India – A spicy Curry

Preparation time – 10 minutes

Cooking time – 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • Shredded coconut – 1 cup
  • Chili powder – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric – ¼ tsp
  • Vegetable oil – 2 tbsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 ½ tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1 tsp
  • Onion – 1, medium
  • Tomato – 1
  • Tamarind juice – 1 tbsp
  • Green chilies – 2
  • Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
  • Salt – as needed
  • Mackerel fillets – 500 gm
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp

How To Prepare

  • In the blender, add the shredded coconut along with turmeric and chili powder and make a smooth paste out of them.
  • Put a saucepan on the heat and add the oil. In the hot oil, add the fenugreek and mustard seeds. When they begin to splutter, put in the finely chopped onions along with green chilies.
  • As soon as the onions begin to turn brown, add the tomatoes, coconut paste, tamarind juice, and the mackerel fillets. Mix everything well.
  • Sprinkle some salt and pour ½ cup of water. Tip the curry leaves and let the fish cook on low heat for about 20 minutes.
  • When done, serve the fish with white rice.

Mackerel Fish In India – Grilled Whole Fish

Preparation time – 10 minutes

Marinating time – 30 minutes

Cooking time – 10 minutes

Serving – 4

Ingredients

  • Mackerel – 4, small or medium, whole
  • Lemon juice – 2 tbsp
  • Ginger paste – 1 tsp
  • Garlic paste – 1 tsp
  • Red chili soaked in warm water – 7
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Cumin powder – 1 tsp
  • Coriander leaves – 1 bunch
  • Salt – as needed
  • Vegetable oil – for greasing
  • Onion rings – for garnishing
  • Tomato rings – for garnishing

How To Prepare

  • First, clean the fish well under running water. Then pat them dry with the help of a kitchen towel. Cut at 2-3 places on both sides of the fish so that the spices can go into them.
  • Add the soaked chilies into the blender and blend it. When it becomes smooth, add the ginger and garlic paste, salt, lemon juice. Turmeric and cumin powder into the blender. Blend only once to combine all the pastes together.
  • When done, coat each fish with this spice paste on both sides. Keep the marinated fish in the fridge for about half an hour.
  • In the meantime, heat the griller. Apply oil on it. Take the fish out of the fridge and keep them on the greased griller. Grill them for about 10 minutes. Make sure that you flip the fish in between so that both sides are cooked thoroughly.
  • When both the sides are crisp as well as brownish, take them out of the griller. Place them on the serving plate and add the onion and tomato rings on the top.

You can have grilled mackerel as snacks or as the main dish with rice in lunch or dinner.
